Processing emotion

Is there an amount of time it takes to processes emotions, before it is time to analyze and change thoughts to feel happier? Being aware of the model and the ability to change emotions, I usually want to use it as soon as I can so that I feel better. How do I know that it is time to transition from processing emotion to changing my thoughts?

Also, when helping other people who are having negative thoughts, how can I tell if they need to process their emotions still or if they are ready to change their thoughts. I’m thinking especially with my children. I want to validate their feelings, and help them learn to change their thoughts, but I don’t want to be too hasty or too slow when using the model.
