Keeping my clients engaged in the work

I’m an HR professional who spent 25+ years as a corporate HR manager/director and ventured out to do consulting a couple years ago. My business consists of just myself and I’ve re-worked my business model a few times. My target audience is small/medium businesses who need HR support but not an HR professional on their payroll.

My primary contact is almost always the business owner. However, the work becomes low priority as they wear many hats. I often find myself getting them engaged and then things get busy on their end and keeping up with the work gets lower on their list.

I need to figure out a way to work with them that keeps the momentum going and on their radar. I do not require them to do subscriptions or sign on for major projects. I simply do the work “on-demand”.
