The model – fatalistic?

Hi Brooke,
I joined the Scholars this month and truly enjoy it. So many great resources!
I have a question about the model. As far as I understand it, the focus is primarily on thoughts that influence feelings, with circumstances being something neutral, which we do not have have any effect on. Now, I work in the humanitarian sector, aiming to “improve the world ;-)”, hence find it difficult to only focus on my reaction(s) (thoughts –> feelings) to circumstances and not on how to try to change/influence them. Shouldn’t we in some cases focus on changing the circumstances (e.g. achieve gender equality, eliminate violence, fight discrimination etc.)? Isn’t focusing only on our reactions to these circumstances kind of fatalistic? I have difficulties getting my head around this and you views/explanation would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
