Lose weight only when I feel hungry

After many years of losing weight, gaining weight, losing weight again, etc – and most recently losing over 50lbs and keeping it off, but have hit a plateau… I notice that the scale does not budge unless I feel the physical sensation of hunger. The times I have lost weight, I notice I feel hungry several times a day, and defintely go to bed hungry. Most recently, as I try to get over this plateau place, I am wondering if it is normal to need to feel the sensation of hunger in order to continue losing weight? Is constant hunger and going to bed hungry a normal and necessary part of weight loss?
