Accept negative feelings or use CTFAR to change them to positive feelings?

I am not clear on how the model deals with negative feelings. These two observation feel contradictory.

1/ Since thoughts lead to feelings, I can change my negative feelings by changing my thoughts.
2/ But I also want to accept my negative feelings.

Which is it? Should I accept my negative feelings? Or should I change my thoughts to change my negative feelings to positive feelings? Or is it that I should first use the model to try to turn my negative feelings around, and if I fail then I should accept the negative feelings?
