Going to a conference this week- there are two happy hours and a steak dinner on the itinerary and I’m already feeling bummed about having to say no- not even because I want to drink, but because it feels awkward to say no. I’m a woman in her 30s and to be honest, most people assume I’m pregnant if I say no (I actually had a colleague tell me she assumed I was pregnant and then must have miscarried since I didn’t show 6 months after refusing a drink (!). Saying “I prefer not to” for a young woman often leads to this assumption- (or the assumption that Im an alcoholic- both of which I’d rather avoid in my co-workers…) any tips on not-awkwardly getting around this?
