Buffering Clarification

I would like some clarification, please, on the difference between doing something for the sake of wanting to do it vs. doing something because you’re buffering. For example, I just watched the Bonus Box Welcome video and in it, you mentioned watching TV or browsing Facebook as examples. Can we simply watch TV or Netflix or browse Facebook because we want to or does it mean that we’re using those things to buffer some feeling in our lives? My boyfriend used to say he wanted to have a beer because it tastes good on a hot day, but how would I know he’s not using it to buffer feelings? Same for me if I choose to have a drink after work or if a friend of mine smokes after she gets off work? Thank you!
