How can I practice compassion for myself and still beresponsible for my thoughts?

I am practicing a new thought ‘I am
learning that my emotions are triggered by what I choose to think, and not by other people’. My question is how do I manage to own my emotions without beating myself up for being responsible for my thoughts and my suffering( when it’s the case), knowing that I pick my thoughts? I’ve tried ‘being compassionate’ with myself but it doesn’t work all the time. Thank you.
