Children in discomfort

How should we help them when our kids are clearly suffering (from emotional feelings)?

I know it’s not a great idea to tell them to suck it up, or not deal with it, or it’s all going to be okay, blah blah… stuff WE were told as kids. The result is that we, as adults, have to learn these skills from ground zero.

So, what advice should I give them?

Specifically, my son is nervous about his upcoming piano performance – thinking that he is not ready, not good enough, etc…
