Children & "The Manual"

Brooke’s concept of the “the manual” basically says we should choose not to have expectations for how others show up. But what if those others are children that we are responsible for? Expectations for kids and discipline are part of being parents or teachers. I am a teacher, not a parent. So how does the model work when you’re having strong negative feelings about children’s behavior? Here’s a model…

C Students repeatedly aren’t meeting established behavior expectations
T These kids are so irritating and rude.
F Anger and frustration
A Discipline
R Depends… sometimes behavior changes, sometimes not. Ultimately, the child’s behavior choice is out of my control.

So then the model sometimes becomes this:

C Students repeatedly aren’t meeting established behavior expectations
T These kids are so irritating and rude.
F Anger and frustration
A Discipline
R Student doesn’t change behavior and I’m still frustrated.
