I have been struggling with the idea that even horrendous circumstances are neutral. But if a martian had been looking down on Las Vegas, it would have heard a loud noise, seen humans lying down still, humans running, water leaking from people’s eyes, etc. It’s our incredible problem-solving and you-must-stay-alive brains that bring humanity to circumstances like these, with our thoughts and feelings: “this is so sad”, “this is a tragedy”, “how can we make sure it doesn’t happen again”, “how can I help” etc – as well as a whole lot of unhelpful cave thoughts – or not, as in the case of the shooter who clearly had different thoughts. Have I got this at last? 🙂 thanks Brooke.
