Clarification on neutrality of circumstance

Surely the Jewish woman I am today is living a better life than the me that would have lived in Poland during World War II as my grandmother did? In this case aren’t we talking about a difference in circumstances? How can we say my life as a human today has the same capacity to think thoughts on purpose & create positive results as my grandmother whose family was murdered and starved for years (among other facts of her experience during that time)? Thanks for your help on this.
