Coaching client doesn’t want to discuss painful event

Hi Brooke,

My coaching client came to me to process a recent breakup. After some discussion she realized that talking about the guy is a trigger for her and she doesn’t want to talk about him anymore. She’d like to continue coaching, but not on the breakup. I usually follow up with notes after every session. I plan on going over the subject again in my notes. This is against her wishes, but I feel that I am here for coaching on the most important – the breakup. I will tell her in my coaching notes that the event is neutral and her thoughts are making her miserable.
I will also say that this is happening for her. How would you approach it? Is it ok to go against her ask?

Thanks!
Anna
