I was reading about the hierarchy of human needs, and how human beings suffer (i.e. experience negative emotions) if these needs are not met.
My understanding is that these deep-seated needs are present within us subconsciously, and that someone could feel negative emotion from these unmet needs, without necessarily having access to conscious thoughts such as “my need for belonging and connection is not met”.
Or do you think that these unmet needs would necessarily create a set of conscious thoughts that would lead a self-aware person to trace the suffering back to that need, and solve for it?
I’d love to hear how you incorporate this notion into your teaching.
