Expectations vs Manuals at Work

I’m working at a company where I’m both so frustrated and anxious.

I’m having trouble deciding what to believe when I’m having thoughts like ‘ He really should have been clear about that up front if its an issue’ , ‘I can’t read his mind, he keeps bringing up the same topic weekly’, and ‘He is asking me to ask for positive reviews every week now’ .

So I’d like to believe I can ask my boss to let me know what I need to work on but is this an expectation of managers or is this a manual I have for him? What is the difference between expectations and manuals ? If there are expectations of my manager, where can I find these expectations or can I ask him myself? Are expectations of myself written somewhere other than my job description or can I ask? How can I tell if what my boss is saying is just a manual that he has for me?
