Feeling Emotions at Home

I am dealing with a health issue that could be very serious, and I am trying to process my emotions around it without turning to food for comfort (buffering). I want to be able to feel my fear instead of repress it, but my elderly mother lives with me, and I don’t want her to know what is going on. How can I feel my emotions while being guarded? I feel like I’m a prisoner in my own home.
