Holding space vs empathy

During Coach Week, Brook coached a client who shared that the circumstance in her life included that her husband had ended his own life in 2019. Brook brilliantly led her through the model and it was fascinating. At the same time, I have been trained as a coach (I’m a weight loss coach at Noom) to acknowledge the user’s feelings with empathy and affirmation (however, not praise).

Brooke did not say anything to the effect of “I can only imagine what it was like to experience that” “It can be difficult when life presents us with a trauma like that.” etc. And I’m curious if the LCS method of coaching purposefully removes comments about empathy or affirmation to hold neutral space.

I just find the different coaching methods really interesting and wanted to learn more. Thank you!
