C: Botham Jean was killed in his own home by off-duty police officer Amber Guyger, on Sept 6, 2018.
Atatiana Jefferson was shot in her home in front of her nephew by police in response to a wellness check from a neighbor on October 12, 2019.
On December 23, 2019, I was mistaken as an intruder in my own NYC apartment home at 5:45 AM as I was waiting in the lobby for my car service to take me to work. The accuser was a white male—he did not greet me or say good morning. He looked at an African American Woman and said, “You cannot stay here.”
Certain shareholders in the building wish to make a roof deck above my unit and there is no doorman to identify shareholders or their guests.
T: I thought he would turn the corner and call the police and I could be killed in my own home. Thankful this did not occur.
F: Rage, fear
A: I wrote a letter to all members of the board, the managing agent, and my attorney and copied the real estate agent who assisted the sale. The board issued an apology.
I requested information about any current or former police officers in the building who may be notified in the event someone perceives there is an intruder in the building. I was informed that there was no such person in the building.
I became despondent and failed to visit my parents for their last Christmas alive, unknown to me.
I insisted on knowing how the building will handle security and recognition of shareholders given my experience of being mistaken as an intruder.
I have not shared this with other shareholders out of shame.
I organized all members on our floor to demand answers regarding the roof.
R: The roof deck committee has not reconvened nor have they made a survey.
I have not received a response to my questions regarding the security of our building, especially after hours.
The roof has been certified and all shareholders are on our floor without ongoing issues.
I am uncertain of the plan to move forward with the roof deck above my unit, which can decrease the life of the roof and increase noise.
I still do not feel safe in my home and am not sure how to get there.
