How long should I feel unpleasant feelings before replacing them with new positive feelings?

Sure, if the situation is inconsequential, it’s good to have the model put things into perspective ASAP (stranger flipping me off on the road). But if it’s serious (a fight with a loved one)—and I want to feel it fully before moving on—how do I know where to draw the line between observing and sulking?
