How to not buffer with new job?

Hi Brooke,

Through Scholars I have learned the concept of buffering. At first I didn’t think it applied to me because I don’t overdrink or overeat. But, I realized that I buffer through work. As mentioned in one of this month’s podcasts (Giving up or Burning Out), I realized that I am one of those people consumed with work and that it doesn’t serve me well.

I am going to be starting a new job soon. Can you provide some specific advice on how not to get wrapped up in overworking with this new job? I am particularly concerned because my brain is already justifying it because it is saying things like “you are going to have to work extra in the beginning to show them what you are capable of” or “It’s normal to have to work more in the beginning because you are getting up to speed, etc.”

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.
