Not resisting indulgent emotions

Hi! I enjoyed Marlene’s class about indulgent emotions and began digging into the workbook The Power of Emotion. It talks a lot about allowing emotion, feeling it with compassion, and not resisting it.
A few pages later, it says, “Whenever I feel doubt or worry sneak in, I immediately shift and start practicing one of the above emotions.”

How do these two concepts work together? My understanding of this is that when an indulgent emotion comes up, we look at it with compassion for a minute, and then shift and practice a better feeling emotion.
Or, are indulgent emotions the exception, and as stated above we should *immediately shift*, without staying with indulgent feeling?
