On Self-Coaching

I am a scholar for three months and I see that each time I set a goal, and anticipate the excuses of my primitive brain, I have to have lists of focus Thoughts that I need to read. It takes me a good twenty minutes to coach myself to pause and do what I planned and not what I feel like in the moment.
I wonder from your experience, if this process is getting better with time, as there may be situations where I will not have the luxury of so much time.
