When other people’s behaviour impacts people I have a duty to protect?

When my husband gets stressed he has a tendency to rant and generally cause chaos in the house. He becomes someone irrational and typically ends up scolding the kids for stuff unfairly which not surprisingly leaves the kids upset as well. I’m getting better about managing my own thoughts in these times, but not sure how to deal with the impact on my children. I want to present a united front so I don’t want to speak badly about his behaviour to kids BUT I also don’t like to see how it impacts them. Also, I don’t want the, to think his behaviour is one to emulate. The kids are 7 and 9.
