Racism

I listened to the podcast Oblivious and Resistant today and Brooke stated that racism may be an “exception” to the model. It seemed that she felt this way because a lot of the thoughts and feelings people have about racism are at a subconscious level.

I love and support all the work Brooke is doing surrounding this topic and look forward to learning from her dive into diversity education, but I am curious why she would say racism is an exception? Isn’t racism still a social construct created by people’s thoughts and feelings?

I have listened to her many times talk about circumstances that are emotionally charged by much of our society (child abuse, suicide, sexism, rape, etc) and she always says these are “neutral” until we have a thought about them. Just curious as to why racism is different or an exception?
