Starting out with exercise

Dear Brooke, I want to start exercising for improved health and tone. I’m not fit at all and wondered if you had any suggestions on a good place to start when starting exercise from scratch. Many times in the past I’ve started out with a goal, gone a few days or weeks, then lapsed. Whenever I get busy exercise is the first thing to go. This time I am thinking I should pick something that I think is very achievable and sustainable. So I was thinking about walking a minimum of 5,000 steps a day. But then I wonder if this is too little to have any value. I’m 45 years old and I think I should probably be doing strength-training type exercises but this doesn’t appeal to me at all – when I went to the gym in the past it was a matter of sheer willpower I couldn’t sustain over the long term. From everything I’ve learned this month I want to plan and calendar exercise ahead of time – I just want to feel confident that the exercise I pick is actually helpful.
