Trauma and life changing diagnosis

Hi there,
I noticed that in some of the coaching calls when someone has suffered serious trauma or life changing diagnosis, the coaching seems to focus less on the model and more on the acceptance of the situation and thoughts and feelings that the person is going through. Is this the exception to the model? Usually the coaching is about changing our thoughts, enabling us to feel something different about a circumstance. I would just love clarity on that.
Thank you.
