Can you clarify the original meaning from which you’ve chosen to use the word buffer?

Is it in the sense of « lessening or moderating the impact of something » ?

I want to explain the concept in my native language and since buffering has several definitions, I want to make sure i translate it properly.

Do you think the image of an emotional bumper would be accurate as well?
