When to Model and change thoughts vs. accept and sit with the feeling

I find myself being both capable of modeling to change thoughts/feelings as well as sit with them and let them stay and pass through.

I keep heeding Brooke’s advice on making sure you don’t just try and model away bad emotion and pushing down the beach ball underwater – but don’t think I should be sitting with every single thought/emotion that’s negative if there’s a simple shift in mindset that I believe to change it.

Can you give any guidance between the distinction between when to do each of them and the reasons why?
