When to use the model and when to just sit with it

There has been a lot of coaching recently about sitting with the discomfort and negative emotions so that you learn that you can deal with it and the fear of the negative emotions diminishes (is that correct)? But there is also the model. When do we use the model and when to we just sit with it? If we learn to just sit with the negative emotions and not let it bother us then do we still need the model? I am just confused. I find both of these very helpful but now I am struggling with what situations are appropriate for each concept.
I hope this makes sense. I am having a hard time putting this into words.
