Hurt as a way to manage your mind?

In episode #189 you talk briefly about using the emotion of hurt “in a way to really manage your mind.” What do you mean by this? Is hurt an emotion you deliberately choose to feel by thinking thoughts that create the feeling of hurt?
I totally understand wanting to have hurt as an emotion that we are willing to feel. The ability to hurt helps us feel human. It’s an emotion I understand wanting to allow. But would deliberately choosing to feel hurt by purposely thinking the thoughts that lead it help us manage our mind? Is this a way to see how in charge we are of our feelings?
Anyway, I would love more insight on this idea. Thanks!
