I am a oncology nurse navigator. What that means is I help patients and families navigate their cancer care. I keep thinking that my job should be offering and finding solutions to problems. Which some of it is but a good part of it is just listening. I wonder does holding space mean listening and not offering solutions? Holding space, or what I think it means, can be uncomfortable for me.
I always want to offer a solution but I am starting to realize this isn’t what people always want or need from me. Offering solutions makes me feel useful but maybe I should be focusing on listening and helping people see how they are thinking. Would coach training help me in this area? Maybe it could develop into a coaching business of coaching caregivers. Thoughts?
