Moving Forward vs. Resisting? Fear of Giving Too Much Time to a Thought?

Sometimes when I have a thought that I know isn’t true, I very quickly acknowledge the thought and then ignore it and move on.

I am not sure if I move on so quickly because I know it isn’t true or because I am afraid that if I give more time to the thought, I will give in to it and start buffering (overeating/giving in to an urge).

Is ignoring a thought and quickly moving on/avoiding it because I know it isn’t helpful or productive the same as resisting the thought? Also, how do you recommend handling the fear that if I give too much time to a thought, I will start believing it/convince myself it is true?
