That will never happen here (MO)

I work on bicycle and pedestrian transportation planning. One of the cities within my territory has a pervasive attitude of “that will never work here” “we’re different” “that works well in other places, but won’t here” “that will never happen”, etc. I have seen this in other communities as well. Of course if all of the staff in a position to make it work are having this thought then it won’t ever work. I’m trying to come up with some bridge thoughts, etc. to offer these people when these comments come up. Here are some things I’ve got so far: What if it did? What if it doesn’t? How will that help or hurt the city? This is a city. All cities have unique characteristics, but they all have similarities too. Can you help me with any other suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.
