Urge Jar Protocol – How Long?

I understand the importance of creating a plan and sticking with it so that it becomes ingrained and habitual and second-nature and that it’s really a lifestyle change. I’m wondering, however, if the expectation is to continue writing a plan/protocol for the rest of your life or is it something that can taper off as you learn to allow urges with little effort? Or is this something where it all depends on the person and his/her goals?
