Why we do things


You say ‘everything you do in your life is because you want to feel a certain way’. (actual quote)
On the other hand, you say “you shouldn’t want to because you think it will make you feel (better)” (paraphrase).
I agree with both, but at a logical level, these two statements seem contradictory.
Is the first one coming from an unintentional thinking/model and the second one coming from a more conscious point of view?

How to reconcile the apparently opposing statements?
