Compensation Thinking

I found this paragraph in the study vault from the ‘Why You Must Coach Yourself To Grow’ booklet (pg. 18) It reads:

“We need to learn how to view facts as neutral so we don’t have to compensate for negative thinking with positive thinking. This is still too much work that is unnecessary.”

Can you expound on this please? Possibly provide a example or scenario? I really want to understand this but am having a hard time the way it’s written. I’m curious about this because I find myself doing a lot of this type of compensation. But don’t know why I do it.

Thank you!
